201 Helga Fassonaki - Auckland gems: Prunes
We usually define a souvenir as an object that reminds us of a certain place, time, or person; a memento to take back home. Every country has their own special gifts or best-known trade that fills the markets and “souvenir shops,” selling to tourists a romanticised picture of a country’s identity. Often such souvenirs provide narrow windows revealing very little about our experiences of the country itself.
Sometimes the best souvenirs are non-tangible, what we wander upon or discover without the guidance of a tour book. Sometimes it’s a horrible experience with a damn good story. Other times the sensory experience is much more profound than what we can visually or verbally describe. And often the only thing we take away from the visual encounter is an audible memory.
These audio tracks were recorded in Auckland and usually unplanned, realised in the moment of encounter. Some tracks are pieces of found audio as were most of the materials that formed the packaging. Others are places perhaps a wandering cow would stumble upon while on a rebellious excursion away from the farm.

301 Kirsten Dryburgh - Time to Kill: 0+Ai
The mosquitoes have been collected over the 2005/06 summer period, each from a different bite victim. The personal details and characteristics of the individuals, whose blood was taken by the offending mosquitoes, have been collected. Also collected were other significant details such as, the date of the attack, the time of day, and the weather. All the facts are documented on napkins and presented alongside the mosquito – swabbed and captured behind a plastic dome. The 5 articles – souvenirs – have been named separately, according to the blood type of the victim and the first 2 initials of their first name. For exporting purposes, as dead insects come under the classification of meat, each souvenir has been through an eight hour fumigation process so as to be allowed through customs. Documentation of this process is provided with each souvenir. These works can be formally displayed or worn on the body.Includes: 1 plastic bag, 1 safety pin, 1 cotton swab, 1 plastic dome, 1 white paper napkin, 1 mosquito.

501 Finn Ferrier - Auckland Rocks & Minerals

Auckland Rocks & Minerals, is a personal taxonomy of the city. A socialgraphic / psychographic map. I give to you Auckland, my home town. While I was out collecting these samples tourists asked me directions. They were lost at the wrong mountain. Where is Mount Eden, they asked? I pointed to the other side of the remaining King, and told them how to get to Mount Eden. This series is based on a souvenir my friend Kah-Bee bought on one of her first trips to New Zealand. Rocks and Minerals glued to the card, a celebration of the wonderful geological aspects of New Zealand.
Printed paper on card, hot glue, rocks and minerals. Each souvenir is stamped on the back with my stamp (see photo).
